After checkpoint 77, before crossing the Leuvenumseweg towards checkpoint 95, you can turn left onto the cycle path. After 750 meters, you will see the gatehouse of the Jan van Schaffelaar barracks. This building stands 100 meters past the entrance to Ermelo Army Base. The Jan van Schaffelaar barracks, construction of which was completed in 1939, was built for the Dutch army. Due to the German invasion, the first occupants were the Germans belonging to the 'SS Verfügungstruppe Pionier Bataillon' – loosely translated: 'SS Support Troops Engineering Battalion'. During the course of the war, several resistance fighters were imprisoned there awaiting transport to internment camps.
